Grant Award

The City of Decatur Fire Department has been awarded grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under the FY 2011 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program – Fire Prevention and Safety Grant. The project costs total to $87,900.00. The Federal share is $83,505.00 and our match is $4,395.00.

As a part of the program, we will provide home safety inspections which will address any hazards in the home; as well as the installation of lithium battery smoke alarms.  This will ensure that each resident receiving the smoke alarm has it placed in a proper location and that it is utilized and not put away waiting for installation.   We will target residential high risk homes within the City of Decatur giving priority to homes with children under the age of 14 and senior citizens.

Remember smoke alarms save lives.  Each year in the United States 3,000 people are killed in home fires.  Working some alarms increase your chance of surviving a fire by 50%.

If you would like a smoke alarm and a home inspection, please call 404-373-5092 to schedule your appointment.

Visible Street Numbers

Minutes can mean the difference between life and death.  Therefore, The City of Decatur Fire Department encourages residents to have visible address numbers on their homes and/or mailboxes. When the emergency call comes in, we need to find addresses as quickly as possible.  If the numbers on your home are not easy to find or read, it will take longer for public safety to reach you.  We recommend that your address numbers are minimum 4 inches high and .5 inches wide; and visible from the street.  Numbers should not be obstructed by landscape or visible obstructions.  We ask that you take a look at your home to see what improvements can be made to help responding units identify your home in an emergency situation.

For more information on size and placement, please reference City of Decatur Code of Ordinances 18-5 (c) House numbers; and the 2006 International Fire Code 505.1 Address numbers.

Fire Hydrant Testing

Fire departments across the country are required to service fire hydrants twice a year, usually in the spring and fall.  NFPA and ISO require that this inspection be done to ensure the hydrants have proper water pressure and operate as they are designed.

The Decatur Fire Department will test fire hydrants in September and October.  During the pressure testing and flowing of the hydrants the water can become cloudy due to disturbance within the water pipes.  This condition is temporary and usually clears up quickly.

Fire Department Collecting Canned Goods

Look for the fire tent and the big red cans at Decatur’s events – and bring your canned goods or packaged foods to help fill them up. The firefighters are hosting a continuous food drive to help Decatur’s local food banks meet increased needs.

Food drives are frequently held during the holidays but hunger is a year-round crisis for many families, especially during the summer months when children are not in school to take advantage of the National School Lunch program that offers free or reduced-price meals to students.

Decatur is home to food banks run by Decatur Cooperative Ministry (DCM) and Decatur-area Emergency Assistance Ministry (DEAM) and both agencies are seeing an increasing number of families who need assistance with feeding their children.

Not going to the events? Don’t worry – the firefighters also put the cans out at the fire station and at other city buildings. You can drop off your donation any time!
