Minutes can mean the difference between life and death. Therefore, The City of Decatur Fire Department encourages residents to have visible address numbers on their homes and/or mailboxes. When the emergency call comes in, we need to find addresses as quickly as possible. If the numbers on your home are not easy to find or read, it will take longer for public safety to reach you. We recommend that your address numbers are minimum 4 inches high and .5 inches wide; and visible from the street. Numbers should not be obstructed by landscape or visible obstructions. We ask that you take a look at your home to see what improvements can be made to help responding units identify your home in an emergency situation.
For more information on size and placement, please reference City of Decatur Code of Ordinances 18-5 (c) House numbers; and the 2006 International Fire Code 505.1 Address numbers.
